I know I know another press question, but I didn't find the information I wanted with a search. I would like to build a 90-100 ton capacity hydraulic press and I need help with the frame. I want to build the frame with the same structural materials for the sides, bed, etc.

From the junk yard, so probably channel iron construction if I can find something heavy enough. I know that channel iron becomes less and less desirable as the tonnage goes up, but that is what I'm most likely to find. The frame would be 7 ft. Crack Actia Multi Diag 2011 on this page.

Wide and all bolted construction (I don't trust my life to my welding). I have been looking for a good press around here for some time now and can't find anything but the bottle jack imports.

I can't even find one to measure up and copy! Now the questions. What size of channel iron would this require?

Flange width? Is there a good square tubing substitute for the sides? If I can't get the capacity I want with channel iron and square tubing, what size and grade of flat bar should I be looking for to make a frame similar to a K. Wilson press? In case you aren't familiar with a Wilson there is one a little over half way down in this post.

I have built a 100 ton press I used 10 x10 square tube that is 1/2 inch thick then I used 15 by 1/2 inch channel and reinforced it at the pin points with 1 inch plate and used 2.5 inch 4130 pins to support it. I found a very large cylinder and shortened it to have a 13 inch stroke. I bolted mine together with 8 one inch grade eight bolts per side for a total of 32 bolts tying it together. I have taken it to 90 tons with my enerpac 10,000psi pump but I run it with a 5 hp vickers 5000psi piston pump for everyday use. Hopper Paintings.
